Captain America Lives

Captain America is a fictional character, a superhero that appears in comic books published by Marvel Comics. The character first appeared in Captain America Comics #1 (March 1941).

And yes, Captain America was created to aid the U.S. war effort (WWII, that is). And the fictional figure that he is, he wears a costume that bears an American flag motif and he is armed with an indestructible shield. But you know that already, right?!

In my unrelenting pursuit of intruiging stories and inspirational real-life characters, I believe that I have actually found a real-life Captain America.

Two years after being born on Yokota Air Base in Japan, he and his family moved to Scranton, PA, where he spent his childhood and teenage years.

He then atttended the U.S. Naval Academy where he very successfully played football as a linebacker.

After graduating, he was assigned to the U.S. Marine Corps where he rose to the rank of Captain.

While serving with the Marines, “All American” Brian Stann was awarded the Silver Star. And the citation reads something like this:

“The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star Medal to Brian M. Stann, First Lieutenant, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy as Second Mobile Assault Platoon Leader, Weapons Company, Third Battalion, Second Marines, Regimental Combat Team 2, SECOND Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward) in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM from 8 May to 14 May 2005. During Operation MATADOR, Second Lieutenant Stann led his reinforced platoon on an assault through a foreign fighter and Mujahedeen insurgent defense-in-depth to seize the Ramana Bridge north of Karabilah, Iraq. On three separate occasions, he traversed four kilometers of enemy occupied urban terrain in order to maintain his battle position. With each deliberate attack he controlled close air support and the direct fire systems of tanks and heavy machineguns destroying enemy positions along the route. At one point, the enemy massed on his platoon and fired over 30 rocket propelled grenades, machineguns, detonated two improvised explosive devices and attacked the unit with three suicide vehicle borne improvised explosive devices. Second Lieutenant Stann personally directed two casualty evacuations, three vehicle recovery operations and multiple close air support missions under enemy small arms, machinegun and mortar fire in his 360-degree fight. Inspired by his leadership and endurance, Second Lieutenant Stann’s platoon held the battle position on the Euphrates River for six days protecting the Task Force flank and isolating foreign fighters and insurgents north of the river. Second Lieutenant Stann’s zealous initiative, courageous actions, and exceptional presence of mind reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.”

Brian Stann got hooked on martial arts while attending the MCMAP (Marine Corps Martial Arts Program) and he very impressively acquired some very effective cage fighting skills which took him to becoming WEC Light Heavyweight Champion.
After the UFC took over WEC, all WEC-Middleweight and WEC-Light Heavyweight fighters were brought into the UFC family.
Brian Stann dropped from Light Heavyweight to Middleweight where he is currently ranked number 6 in the world with a MMA record of 11-3.

But the Octagon isn’t the only place that Brian Stann is leaving his mark.

The married father of two knows the true meaning of leaving no man behind. He is the very active President of Hire Heroes USA.

Hire Heroes USA’s (HHUSA) mission is to offer transition assistance, job search assistance, and job placement services to those who have honorably served in the US military – and to their spouses – in order to reduce veteran unemployment. HHUSA prioritizes veterans statistically most likely to be unemployed: veterans of Operations IRAQI FREEDOM and ENDURING FREEDOM, and veterans that are wounded or disabled.

As a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, HHUSA’s services are provided at no cost to the veteran.

And let’s recap with some visuals:

UFC 126 Or Curitiba Vs. Rio De Janeiro

I haven’t written about a UFC event in a long time.

Well, that’s about to change today, because UFC 126 features two mixed martial artists fighting for the Middleweight Championship title that bring a lot to the table.

The reigning UFC Middleweight Champ, Anderson “Spider” Silva, is currently considered by many the best pound-per-pound fighter, maybe even the best fighter of all time.

Silva will enter the Octagon at UFC 126 with 13 straight wins. His last win was last August at UFC 117 against Chael Sonnen whom he submitted with triangle choke in the fith round, after he was behind on the scorecards up till that point of the fight.

It ain’t over till it’s over!

The  almost 36-year-old Silva has secured  20 of his 27 career wins by KO, TKO or submission. The Spider’s list of  “victims” reads like at Who’s Who of UFC Middleweight Elite: Forrest Griffin, Rich Franklin, Nate Marquardt, Dan Henderson and Demian Mia.

“The Spider” has never been defeated (12-0) inside the Octagon.

Silva is a graduate of the Chute Boxe Academy that opened as a Muay Thai academy in 1978 in Curitiba, Brazil.

By 1995, the Chute Boxe team was considered a prime training ground for Vale Tudo fighters.

With an aggressive and physical style focused around their muay thai skills, Chute Boxe fighters are well-rounded fighters, able to use submissions, punches, kicks, and various grappling styles as needed.

You can clearly see these elements of Anderson Silva’s fighting style, even though he left Chute Boxe in 2003 to start MuayThai Dream Team.

Along Came The Spider:

But will it be enough when he faces this formidable opponent fromRio de Janeiro in UFC 126?

At the youthful age of 19,  Vitor “Phenom”Belfort had his successful debut in the Octagon a whopping 14 years ago this month.  He later  went on to capture the light heavyweight championship.

The Carlson Gracie master student from Rio d Janeiro is truly blessed with some of the most stinging hand speed that will wreak havoc if he has his way.

Vitor has attained 13 of his 19 career wins either by KO or TKO.  Like Anderson Silva, Vitor has accomplished some remarkable victories against a number of outstanding opponents such as Matt Lindland, Wanderlei Silva, UFC hall of famer  Randy Couture and Bobby Southworth.

Should Vitor Belfort win against Anderson Silva, he would become the third fighter ever to UFC titles in multiple weight classes.

The other two fighters? Randy Couture and B.J. Penn.

UFC-Fan Kevin James And The MMA-Express

I have a confession to make!

I always enjoyed watching “The King Of Queens” starring Kevin James.

Even before I was able to briefly meet him and the rest of the cast after shooting one of their final episodes at Sony Picture Studios in L.A. several years ago.

Kevin James has been known to be a big supporter of mixed martials arts in general and UFC in specific.

He has been seen training with Randy “The Natural” Couture.

More and more media outlets are reporting that Kevin James will be starring and co-producing a MMA-related movie sometime next year.

In the meantime, I thought you might enjoy a video clip I found with him, Randy Couture, Dan Henderson, Quinton “Rampage” Jackson in a scene of “The King Of Queens”, in which he plays a IPS delivery driver, who picks a fight with the wrong group of guys.

Enjoy The MMA-Express!

Should Ken Shamrock Retire From Professional Fighting?

Just recently living MMA legend Ken Shamrock lost another fight in the cage. This time against veteran cage fighter and extremely effective kicker, Pedro Rizzo from Brazil, who himself is not even close to current World Championship status, but who can still cause some serious damage.

46-year old Ken Shamrock, who at the peak of his professional fighting career was also known as “The World’s Most Dangerous Man”, is still in incredible shape, but unfortunately he doesn’t implement the way he was known for or better feared of.

Together with legendary Royce Gracie, Ken Shamrock was the first MMA fighter to be inducted into UFC’s Hall of Fame just 5 years ago.

The vast majority of his recent fights, Ken Shamrock has lost during the first round, which just has to be to frustrating to say the least.

With his name recognition he still can get crowds excited to show up in throes to watch him step into the cage.

With his vast experience and extraordinary fighting skills that encompass some of the best submission grappling prowess the world has ever witnessed, I firmly believe that Ken Shamrock could easily become a highly sought champion trainer/instructor, fight commentator/analyst and so much more that would even pay some serious dinero.

So, again I ask you “Should MMA Legend Ken Shamrock retire from professional fighting?’

While you contemplate, enter “The Lion’s Den” and meet one of the best MMA fighters ever, Ken Shamrock:

The Man Who Dethroned MMA Legend, Fedor “The Last Emperor” Emelianenko

Considered by many to be the best MMA fighter of all times, Fedor  “The Last Emperor” Emelianenko was undefeated in 28 straight fights for just about 10 years and that’s truly impressive in my book.

Even though, some critics would say that he hasn’t fought for UFC and thus hasn’t competed against the truly best Heavyweights in the world and that would currently include somebody like Brock Lesnar.

Nevertheless, last Saturday Strikeforce sent Fedor into the cage to fight two-time BJJ World Champion, Fabricio “Go Horse” Werdum, from Porto Alegre, Brazil, who had a record of 13-4-1.

Sherdog ranks heavyweight Fabricio Werdum #9  in the world.

Already 2 1/2 years ago he defeated Fedor’s brother, Aleksander via arm triangle choke in the first round.

Last Saturday, Fabricio made history by dethroning “The Last Emperor” after just around 1 minute into the first round!

Check out how he made Fedor tap:

Fabricio Werdum will now get a title fight against Dutchman Alistair Overeem, who he beat 3 years ago via Kimura, and so he continues to manifest his reputation as a formidable submission fighter.

USMC Teaches UFC Combat Outside The Octagon

I guess you can say that UFC fighters are somewhat like modern-day gladiators.

Just a couple of days ago I stumbled across something I think you’re going to like.

Several UFC fighters and UFC President, Dana White, travelled to the United States Marine Corps’ MACE (Martial Arts Center of Excellence) and they couldn’t have been more impressed with what they saw and experienced first-hand.

The U.S. Marines at Quantico, who are true warriors in the true sense, put their amazing skills on display.

It sure was an adventure for the UFC guys and I pull my hat that they got out of their comfort zone and tried some stuff they don’t normally do on a daily basis. Kudos!

I Really Hope Thiago Alves ….

… gets well and everything works out for him.

Just in case you don’t know what and who I’m talking about:

Thiago Alves is the 26 year old Brazilian MMA fighter who was supposed to fight tonight in UFC 111 against fellow welterweight fighter, Jon Fitch.

Both fighters are considered among the very best this weight class has to offer.

And just today I heard the shocking announcement that Thiago Alves was taken off the fight card because of a so-called brain irregularity found in a CAT scan.

Tonight’s UFC 111 events take place in New Jersey and from what I learned their State Athletic Commission did not give  their O.K. to Dana White’s team to let Thiago fight and show off his superb Muay Thai and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu skills in The Octagon.

Of course, Thiago will undergo further tests next week to determine what the next steps will be. This is a real bummer.

I really hope Thiago Alves gets well and everything works out for him whatever a successful future has in store for him.

In the meantime, check out Thiago “The Pitbull” Alves’ story:

Erin Go Bragh! And Don’t Forget The Shamrocks!

Hey guys,

Got back from the second largest St. Patrick’s Day Parade and festivities in the United States.

After New York City, Savannah is a close second when it comes to the best that St. Patty’s has to offer.

On a quick side note, St. Patrick’s Day is an official holiday in Ireland, but not necessarily the official drinking day it is here in the U.S. of A.

But back to Savannah, Georgia: This city of somewhere around 200,000 population has a long tradition celebrating everything Irish.

This year’s parade was its 187th and there are quite a number of citizens of Irish heritage.

On the Eve of St. Patrick’s Day I was able to witness several bands of bag-pipers face off. It was absolutely mesmerizing.

These guys come from as far away as NYC, Boston and even the Emerald Isle, aka Ireland!

We didn’t celebrate into the wee hours, because we had to be at Calhoun Square by 5:30 a.m. and that meant getting up at 4:15 a.m.!

Why so early if the parade doesn’t start until 10 in the morning?

Traditions are strong here, which means securing your curbside spot at 6 a.m. to set up your chairs, gazebos and all your goodies. And that means a lot of food and drinks with friends and family.

The parade was amazing and went for around 4 1/2 hours. What a great experience thanks to our newly found friends and life-long Savannahians.

I guess everybody makes the connection between Irish and their national symbol, the three-leaf clover or shamrock.

The shamrocks I want to remember today are former UFC fighters and brothers, Ken and Frank, who are legendary in their own right.

Let’s start with Ken Shamrock (UFC Hall of Famer), who was the first Superfight Ultimate Champion before the title was renamed to Heavyweight Champion.

During his reign this one-time professional wrestler was considered the world’s best mixed martial artist and even today he is still considered one of the best fighters of all time.

Ken Shamrock is the older adopted brother of former UFC champion, Frank Shamrock.

At one time known as “The World’s Most Dangerous Man”, Ken Shamrock is also the founder of one of the most successful MMA camps, “The Lion’s Den”.

And then there was his younger adopted brother and fellow UFC champion, Frank Shamrock.

Nicknamed “The Legend”, Frank has also been called the best competitor in UFC history.

He held the UFC Middleweight title, before it was renamed Light Heavyweight.

Like his brother, Ken, he is also an expert at submission fighting.

Nowadays, Frank is in great demand as a fight commentator and coach.

Here some great tips from the author of “Mixed Martial Arts For Dummies”:
