That's amazing, John.
I am honored and very grateful that you came here to share your story and experience.
It must have been in the early 1980's that I heard/read about Sensei Emil Farkas
in a martial arts publication while living in Germany. He has always intrigued me
and obviously he has had a very direct and positive influence on your life.
I think it's great that you are teaching your daughter some very valuable lessons to stay safe.
You made my day, John.

I studied under Sensei Farkas as a young man in the early to mid 1980's. I had studied Judo before that, and have since practiced Muy-Thai, and Ju-Jitsu at different times in my life. I can honestly say that my time learning from Sensei Farkas was the most valuable, practical, and focused martial arts experience in my life. Also, having lived in some rough areas and having been attacked numerous times, I can add that it was his training, his direct and simple self defense techniques of combat Shotokan that saved my life (more than once), so I was, and am grateful for the time I spent with him. These days I try to teach my daughter the same minimal movement, max effectiveness techniques to protect herself. Thank you for your story, I am glad to hear of the more recent honors and press he is receiving... he went under respected for many years.

Hey Matt,
Thanks for writing in. I really appreciate it.
You know, I read about Emil Farkas way back in the late 70s
and already admired him then. And you're right he really has had a
a major influence in many ways.
To be honest, I would have to find out more about who awarded him
his rank in Shotokan. Must have been in Hungary.
Anyway, great to hear from you, Matt.

Great profile on a martial artist who has clearly had an influence on our pop culture and general understanding of the martial arts. Any idea who has awarded him his rank in Combat Shotokan, or original Shotokan?
