Bruce Lee 2010 – Can A 51-Year-Old Son Of Scotland Pull It Off?

Believe it or not: This month, the legendary Bruce Lee would have turned 70!

Just recently the legend’s family selected a Scotsman to perform his Jeet Kune Do skills at a celebration in San Francisco (Bruce Lee’s city of birth) to honor his life and accomplishments.

Man of the hour is 51-year-old Son of Scotland Tommy Carruthers from Glasgow.

This has to be a great honor for any martial artist, especially Jeet Kune Do practitioner, to be the only person giving a demonstration of Bruce Lee’s art at this very special event.

And it has to be even more special to him having been chosen by Bruce Lee’s family, being Linda Lee Caldwell and Shannon Lee.

Tommy Carruthers owns a martial arts school in Glasgow and gives seminars in numerous countries around globe.

He has also proven to be extraordinarily proficient in Wing Chun Kung Fu and Western boxing.

We all know that talk is cheap.

So why don’t you just join me in getting a better idea of Tommy Carruthers in action and let me know if you think that he can pull it off.

The Bruce Lee Saga Continues

Bruce Lee, considered by many as one the most famous martial arts superstars of all time,  left this world over 36 years ago.

The Bruce Lee saga continues till this day and will continue to be a topic for decades to come.

If everything goes according to plan, Bruce Lee fans and martial arts enthusiasts worldwide are in for a treat. I will tell you in a minute why that is.

Besides residing in the United States, Bruce Lee  also had a Hong Kong residence during the last couple of his adult years up to his untimely passing in 1973.

It is located in Kowloon Tong and due to the vicinity to the former Hong Kong airport, Kai Tak, houses there were not allowed to be built any higher than 2-3 stories as far as I was told.

On one of my numerous business trips to the former British colony during the early Nineties, I actually had a Saturday off and so I jumped on the subway, aka MTR (Mass Transit Railway), to check it out.

After getting off the train and leaving the MTR station, I asked a local policeman how to get there and it was actually pretty easy to find at 41  Cumberland Road.

Honestly, I was expecting some really impressive mansion or whatever, but the house I remembered was very subdued. Probably just the way the former owner wanted it for privacy reasons. And who could blame him?!

Anyway, the house (that has been a romance hotel!)  was sold again several months ago to a philanthropic Hong Kong businessman, who is in his Eighties and who would love to see the house become The Bruce Lee Museum.

I learnt just 10 days ago that Shannon Lee, daughter of Bruce Lee, was on her way over to the Big Kong for further talks on this issue.

Let’s keep our fingers crossed that they can work out a deal everybody is happy with real soon.

This would be awesome, don’t you think?

Fighting Legend Benny “The Jet” Urquidez offers great advice to any serious
martial artist.

For those of you who don’t remember or who have never heard of “The Jet”:

Benny Urquidez was a true force in professional full-contact kick-boxing,
especially in the 70s. His record was something like 58 wins – 0 losses!

He even fought the toughest fighters in Thailand and Japan at their own
rules and walked away victoriously.

What I didn’t know until recently, was that “The Jet” has actually been
a Mixed Martial Artist for the longest time and living up to one of his
own principles:

Keep an open mind and apply what works.

After ending one of the most successful professional careers ever,
Benny Urquidez has been teaching here in the U.S. and overseas.

Besides teaching, “The Jet” has appeared in a number of movies,
starring with big names such as John Cusack, Jackie Chan, Joe
Lewis, Shannon Lee (daughter of the legendary Bruce Lee!).

Still don’t believe me?

Check out this clip with “The Jet” and Jackie Chan. This is considered
by most the second-best movie fight of all times:
