Can Wushu Kung Fu Become An Olympic Discipline?

We all know that boxing, wrestling, judo and even Taekwondo have been celebrated Olympic sports.

I have been asking myself for many years when karate would get a shot at being part of the Olympic family.

But it looks like with all the different organizations out there with their own agenda it will probably continue to stand in its own way.

Along with the fact that they would need one clear direction and mission statement presented to the IOC by spokespersons with clout.

Clout? Well, would you agree that somebody like Jackie Chan has clout to get people’s attention that would help Wushu become an Olympic discipline?

Wushu organizers were able to put on an international tournament during the Beijing Games in 2008 and showcase what Wushu competition is all about.

There seem to be competing Wushu organizations who might just drop their own personal agenda for the big goal and that would be the Olympic Games in the foreseeable future.

Your thoughts and comments are always welcome here (but you knew that already).

Wushu has more than enough elements to be an olympic discipline. Now, this is very complicated due to several other external factors. For instance, the IOC is not open to admit new disciplines, actually is trying to make the list smaller. Therefore, no matter how Wushu is re-codified and presented, it’s already a very tough battle to win.

Pretty amazing feats these guys can do! Unfortunately, really hard to get more martial arts events. They already kept karate out. I think they should allow all martial artists to compete in open sparring and open forms. They would get a higher caliber of athlete than just allowing TKD. Admittedly, very hard to judge Wushu as it is subjective, like gymnastics.

I also think it would be interesting to see open sparring and open forms than just allowing TKD.
And like you say, judging Wushu would be subjective like gymnastics which is even divided in Oympic and rhythmic.
We’ll see if the IOC looks into it (or not).
Thanks for you comments, Matt.

Thanks for writing in.
I was not aware that the IOC was trying to make the list of disciplines smaller. Interesting.
That would make it a bit difficult for Wushu to attain Olympic status.
I appreciate your feedback.

Are they cutting the disciplines because of budget? I think i agree to that, they should open it not just for TKD but other forms too.

Thanks for your comment, Kenneth.
I agree, why just TKD (Olympic style)?
And why should politics stop at the IOC?
We will just have to wait and see.
Thanks again for writing in.
